DIAMONDS

Choosing Diamonds

A diamond’s cut is more than just a shape. Well-cut diamonds have more sparkle than poorly cut diamonds, which looks dull.

Grading

Diamonds are graded in four ways, the famous "Four Cs" - Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat-weight.

Cut is more than just the shape of the diamond. Diamonds can be cut into a number of shapes depending on the nature of the stone. The most common of these are round-brilliant, oval, marquees, pear, heart and emerald. However it is the proportions of the cut that determine how good a cut is and this is the work of a master diamond cutter.

A well cut diamond handles light better, giving more sparkle and greater beauty that a poorly cut diamond. If the cut is too deep then some light escapes through the opposite side of the pavilion. If, on the other hand, it is too shallow then light escapes through the pavilion before it can be reflected inside the diamond. Both these errors result in a dull, lustreless diamond lacking the sparkle that is associated with a well-cut diamond. With the depth of the cut just right, light is reflected repeatedly inside the diamond and emerges through the top of the diamond.
